OUR VISION

CREATING A NEW URBAN
SOCCER DEVELOPMENT MODEL HERE IN SYRACUSE

The YWCA's Syracuse City FC (Futbol Community) is dedicated to providing quality youth soccer programs to the city's young people. Our initiatives aim to bridge the gap in youth soccer development and ensure access for those who encounter obstacles in participating in the sport. By fostering innovative and collaborative approaches, we strive to establish a new urban soccer development model that offers children in Syracuse the chance to learn and play, encourages healthy lifestyles, enhances pathways to success, and demonstrates alternatives to the pay-to-play system.

OUR STORY

A NEW BEGINNING.

In 2017, the YWCA of Syracuse & Onondaga County Inc. collaborated with the U.S. Soccer Foundation to introduce the Soccer for Success after-school mentoring program in Syracuse. This free program aims to promote healthy habits and essential life skills through dedicated coach-mentors. Soon, YWCA staff recognized the presence of many talented and passionate players eager to compete. However, with youth soccer in the U.S. becoming a pay-to-play sport, many gifted youths found themselves without the opportunity to develop their skills.

In response, during the summer of 2018, several YWCA staff members began offering additional training sessions for youth keen on enhancing their soccer abilities, leading to the creation of Syracuse City FC (Football Club). With the generous support of community members, the club successfully formed two teams to compete in local leagues. By the fall of 2019, the YWCA officially integrated Syracuse City FC into its programming, launching the Urban Soccer Development Program.

OUR STORY

CLOSING THE GAP

Syracuse is home to many children passionate about soccer, yet they often lack access to suitable development programs. This is primarily due to financial barriers, as program fees are too steep for low-income, and geographical challenges, with most programs situated outside the city. To address this issue, the YWCA's Syracuse City FC (SCFC) seeks to enhance existing city soccer initiatives by creating affordable, city-based youth development programs. These programs will allow children to improve soccer skills, develop social and leadership abilities, and view the sport as a potential pathway to college.
